“Uncovering the Spirit of Place at North Carolina Central University”
The practice of creating “deep maps” to write spatial narratives offers an opportunity to blend a sense of geographic place with an understanding of the historical and emotional landscape that accompanies that place. This project will develop a course that takes advantage of the way that a digital map can offer hyperlinks and layering in order to create a map of North Carolina Central University that incorporates history, images, autobiography, and topography. The goal of the course will be to explore the connections between these data streams in order to come up with a multi-dimensional narrative of “the sloping hills, the verdant green” of the first public liberal arts institution for African Americans in the United States.
